CNN Honors Dr. Johnna Nynas as a Transformative Champion for Change

CNN has recognized Dr. Johnna Nynas, an esteemed OB/GYN at Sanford Bemidji in Minnesota, as one of this year’s Champions for Change honorees. This prestigious accolade celebrates individuals who are making significant impacts within their communities and around the globe.

Recognizing Leaders Across Diverse Fields

Dr. Nynas stands among an exclusive group of 14 honorees, each making waves in fields ranging from healthcare and education to fashion and the arts. CNN’s Champions for Change initiative shines a spotlight on these trailblazers who are pioneering a brighter future through their grit, creativity, and innovative spirit. The program’s narrative unfolds on air and across CNN’s digital platforms, culminating in an hour-long special hosted by Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta.

Spotlight on Rural Healthcare Innovation

Dr. Nynas recently featured in a CNN segment that highlighted the innovative ways Sanford Health is providing essential medical care via telehealth to pregnant women in rural northern Minnesota. The healthcare provider equips patients with a user-friendly toolkit, including a Doppler device for measuring fetal heart rate and a blood pressure cuff, enabling virtual prenatal checkups.

How the Boston Celtics Enhanced My Berlin Experience

“We are delivering care to women rather than expecting them to come to us,” explained Dr. Nynas. “Many patients lack reliable transportation or funds for travel. By bringing care to them, we increase their engagement in recommended health practices, leading to better outcomes for both mothers and babies.”

Securing Vital Grants for Rural Maternity Health

Dr. Nynas played a crucial role in securing a $3.67 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Rural Maternity and Obstetric Management Strategies (RMOMS) program. This funding was instrumental in establishing the Families First: Rural Maternity Health Collaborative, which aims to enhance prenatal, obstetric, and postpartum care access while addressing health disparities among women in rural, underserved, and tribal communities.

Comprehensive Support for Expecting Mothers

Under the RMOMS program, Sanford Health has developed a comprehensive support system. The initiative includes setting up medical appointments, providing patient transportation, and arranging nurse home visits to evaluate and address additional patient needs beyond medical care. This holistic approach ensures that expecting mothers receive the support necessary for healthy pregnancies and positive birth outcomes.

Dr. Johnna Nynas’s dedication to improving healthcare accessibility and outcomes exemplifies the transformative impact recognized by CNN’s Champions for Change program. Her work not only enhances the well-being of her patients but also serves as a beacon of innovation and compassion in rural healthcare.
