Rudy Giuliani, the former attorney for ex-President Trump, has been disbarred in New York as of Tuesday, losing his license to practice law.
Why This Matters: Giuliani’s Legal Troubles and Election Controversy
The New York Appellate Division First Department’s order marks a significant event in the ongoing fallout from Giuliani’s efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. This panel of judges concluded that Giuliani made “demonstrably false and misleading statements” to the courts, lawmakers, and the public about the election. They accused him of “flagrantly misusing” his role as Trump’s lawyer and deliberately violating key legal principles.
Giuliani’s Response: Plans to Appeal
Ted Goodman, Giuliani’s spokesperson, announced that Giuliani plans to appeal the disbarment. Goodman urged members of the legal community who uphold the rule of law to denounce the decision as politically and ideologically corrupt.
Previously, in 2021, Giuliani was suspended from practicing law in New York. An attorney disciplinary committee later recommended his disbarment in Washington, D.C., where he had been an inactive member since 2002.
The Bigger Picture: National Strife and Legal Repercussions
The court highlighted Giuliani’s role in contributing to the national discord following the 2020 presidential election. His “disruptive and disrespectful behavior” during a hearing further supported the case for his disbarment. Giuliani now faces multiple legal charges and financial penalties related to his election interference activities.

In Arizona, Giuliani pleaded not guilty in May in a case involving fake electors, resulting in a $10,000 bond due to difficulties in serving him a summons. In Georgia, he faces 13 charges, including conspiracy to commit forgery and violations of Georgia’s RICO Act. Additionally, he was ordered to pay $148 million for defaming two Georgia election workers.
The New York court emphasized that Giuliani’s close association with the president amplified his actions and statements to the public. However, the court condemned his behavior for causing “immeasurable damage to our democracy.”
