On the first day back after winter break, Perry High School in Iowa experienced a devastating incident as a 17-year-old student opened fire, resulting in one fatality and injuries to four other students and a school administrator. The shooter, identified as Dylan Butler, ultimately took his own life. The community, with around 7,800 residents, is reeling from the senseless tragedy.

The incident unfolded around 7:37 a.m., prompting a swift response from law enforcement to an active shooter situation at Perry High School. Armed with a pump-action shotgun and a small-caliber handgun, the shooter inflicted harm on several individuals.

Mitch Mortvedt, the assistant director of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, revealed in a news conference that responding officers found victims who had been shot and discovered the shooter dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Additionally, an “improvised explosive device” was found on the premises, later rendered safe by authorities.

The identity of the student killed in the shooting has not been disclosed. However, the injuries sustained by the four students and the school administrator are expected to be non-fatal, with all individuals anticipated to survive.
