A 2-year-old girl in Hampton, Virginia, died after accidentally shooting herself with a gun earlier this week.
Officers arrived at the toddler’s home Tuesday afternoon in response to a neighbor’s call and found the girl suffering from a single gunshot wound. They took her to the hospital, where she died from her injuries, the Hampton Police Department said in a release.
While the department is still looking into the incident, the preliminary investigation suggests that the girl got hold of a loaded gun and proceeded to accidentally shoot herself, police said.
Police neither said whether the girl was alone at the time, nor whether the owner of the firearm would face charges in her death.
Neither the girl nor her parents have been publicly identified by authorities.
Neighbors of the family are stunned by the shooting.
“I’m sure we’ve run into them a couple of times. It’s really sad,” neighbor Alex Jung, who lives in the same building, told WAVY-TV.
