Norfolk Declares Snow Emergency in Anticipation of Winter Storm

As the National Weather Service issues a winter storm warning for Madison County, the City of Norfolk is taking proactive measures to ensure public safety and facilitate efficient snow removal. A snow emergency has been declared, effective from 7 p.m. Sunday until further notice, aligning with the forecast of significant snowfall and gusty winds.

Parking Restrictions: During the snow emergency, parking restrictions will be strictly enforced. Parking is prohibited on cul-de-sacs and emergency snow routes. On residential streets, parking is permitted only on the even side, with a strong recommendation for residents to park off the street if feasible. This strategy enhances the effectiveness of snow removal operations carried out by city crews.

Enforcement Measures: Citations will be issued to vehicles parked on the odd side of residential streets and on cul-de-sacs. Moreover, cars parked on emergency snow routes will be subject to towing. The city website provides a comprehensive description of emergency snow routes for residents’ reference.

Snow Emergency Communication: To keep residents informed about the status of the snow emergency, a dedicated snow number (402-844-2299) has been established. Additionally, residents can sign up for Norfolk emergency text alerts through the city’s website or by texting “norfolkalerts” to 41372. This ensures timely notifications about any emergency, including snow-related updates.

Responsibility of Property Owners: Reminding citizens of their responsibilities under Section 22-1 of the city code, property owners and occupants are obligated to clear snow and ice from sidewalks within 24 hours after precipitation stops. Additionally, residents are urged to avoid piling snow around fire hydrants and to be mindful of drifting around exhaust pipes on their homes. For assistance with clearing snow around hydrants, the fire division can be contacted at 402-844-2050.

As Norfolk prepares for the winter storm, the declaration of a snow emergency reflects a proactive approach to address safety concerns and facilitate the smooth operation of snow removal services. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official city channels and comply with parking restrictions for the collective well-being of the community.
